How Much Sleep Do I Need?

The right amount of sleep depends on your age, daily demands, health, and individual needs. Age-based recommendations give you a useful starting point, but they do not mean every person needs exactly the same number of hours.

Recommended sleep by age

  • Infants 0–3 months: about 14–17 hours in 24 hours.
  • Infants 4–12 months: about 12–16 hours, including naps.
  • Toddlers 1–2 years: about 11–14 hours, including naps.
  • Preschool children 3–5 years: about 10–13 hours, including naps.
  • Children 6–12 years: about 9–12 hours.
  • Teens 13–17 years: about 8–10 hours.
  • Adults 18–60 years: at least 7 hours regularly.
  • Adults 61–64 years: about 7–9 hours.
  • Adults 65 and older: about 7–8 hours.

Start with sleep duration before bedtime math

People often begin by asking for the perfect bedtime. A better first step is to decide how much sleep you want to protect. Once you have that target, you can work backward from your required wake-up time.

Calculating sleep time is useful when you treat it as scheduling rather than prediction. Your actual sleep may not begin the moment you get into bed, and your sleep stages do not follow a fixed clock.

Why you can still feel tired after enough hours

Time in bed and sleep quality are not always the same thing. Frequent waking, stress, pain, breathing problems, alcohol, caffeine, or an irregular schedule can affect how rested you feel.

How a sleep calculator can help

A sleep calculator can compare bedtime and wake-up options after you choose your sleep goal. Use the result as a planning aid. A calculator cannot diagnose a sleep disorder or measure your actual REM or deep-sleep periods.
