Best Time For Bed

How It Works

Transparency matters for a health-related calculator. This page explains what the calculator estimates, what the simplified model assumes, and what it does not measure.

The timing model

The main calculator uses a simplified cycle length plus a small sleep-onset allowance to estimate alternative times. This is a planning model, not a measurement of brain activity. The underlying science shows that sleep cycles vary rather than repeating as a rigid 90-minute clock.

Sleep duration comes first

Calculator output should be interpreted alongside age-appropriate sleep duration guidance. A neat “cycle” calculation is not a reason to deliberately shorten sleep below a healthy amount.

Why results differ from other calculators

Online sleep calculators may use different assumptions for cycle duration or time to fall asleep. The difference does not mean one can measure your exact sleep stages. When comparing tools, focus on transparent assumptions and whether the recommended schedule gives you enough sleep.

Limitations

These tools do not record EEG signals, diagnose sleep disorders, personalize medical treatment, or guarantee how refreshed you will feel. Individual sleep patterns vary with age, health, schedule, environment, and other factors.
